Gamma Knife®
ECU Health’s Gamma Knife Icon™ is a non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery instrument that involves no scalpel or incision. It uses precisely focused beams of radiation to treat malignant and benign brain tumors, as well as vascular and functional brain disorders, without harming surrounding healthy tissue. Gamma Knife radiosurgery may replace or supplement traditional surgery or whole brain radiation, depending on the patient’s diagnosis. Gamma Knife treatment offers several benefits over traditional surgery because it is painless and often an outpatient procedure, and it treats with pinpoint accuracy while preserving healthy tissue and adjusting for movement by the patient or tumor.
NeuroBlate®
NeuroBlate technology allows the neurosurgeon to utilize an MRI-guided, high-intensity laser probe to destroy cancer cells deep within the brain. Through a pencil-size burr hole in the skull, neurosurgeons use real-time imaging to guide the probe into the tumor, where thermal energy is discharged to kill cancer cells. NeuroBlate offers hope for patients with brain tumors who have been given limited treatment options, including those whose tumors may be too risky to treat or did not respond to other treatments, or those who may not do well with open surgery. It is safe, less invasive than most minimally invasive surgery options, and offers faster recovery times after an overnight hospital stay.
GammaTile®
GammaTile Therapy can give patients new hope in the fight against brain tumors. It can eliminate the need for traditional repeat radiation treatments so patients can focus on what matters most — healing. GammaTile is Surgically Targeted Radiation Therapy (STaRT) that is placed at the site of a recurrent brain tumor immediately after removal and starts fighting residual tumor cells right away. Over several weeks, it distributes radiation to tissue where the tumor was once growing while leaving healthy tissue undisturbed, and the collagen tile is naturally absorbed by the body. Patients are able to go on with everyday activities during this time. ECU Health Medical Center is one of a limited number of GammaTile centers in North Carolina and across the country.
