Preventing Diabetes

You can reduce your risk for Type 2 diabetes by eating a balanced and healthy diet, increasing your physical activity and losing weight if needed.

A major research study, the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), confirmed that people with pre-diabetes were able to highly reduce their risk of developing diabetes during the study by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight through food changes and exercise. Study participants followed a low-fat, low-calorie diet and added regular exercise, such as walking fast for 30 minutes, five times a week. These changes worked well for both men and women and were even more effective for participants age 60 and older.
