Spinal Cord Program

Injuries to the spinal cord may interfere with this vital communication between the brain and the body. Our center has a 12-bed specialty unit and a dedicated program for patients with spinal cord injuries who comprise nearly 5 percent of our patient population. The center provides rehabilitation services to patients who experience paraplegia (paralysis of the legs and trunk below chest level) and quadriplegia (movement lost in arms and legs).

The good news for patients with such injuries is that advanced medical intervention and rehabilitation may offer more than survival - they can provide the hope of returning to families, jobs or school. We use a team approach to evaluate the need for assistive technology, help our patients adjust to their injuries and reduce the effects of their impairments.

Therapy in the spinal cord injury program includes:

  • Aquatic therapy
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Counseling on sexual function
  • Driving evaluation
  • Vocational counseling
  • Psychotherapy
  • Relaxation therapy
