Senior citizens are the fastest growing segment of the population both nationally and locally. In recognition of the need to serve this important population, Vidant Health collaborates with local providers and community-based agencies to establish special programs that identify and address the health and social needs of the aging.
The Senior Services Program helps area people who are 55 or older lead healthier, more independent lives. Services include health promotion and screenings, disease management and immunizations.
EastStriders began in 1999 and includes a walking club and weekly educational seminars in cooperation with a local shopping mall. EastStriders provides incentives for healthy activities and behaviors.
Our membership Seniors Program serving older adults in the area was launched in 2000. The program collaborates with area aging coalitions, the Council on Aging, AARP, various civic groups and hospital programs to offer educational, fitness, social and health screening events. These outreach activities help improve access to care and quality of life for area seniors. The Seniors Program reaches about 900 older adults each month. Services include a monthly newsletter, a resource library and discounts with some area merchants. The program receives support from the Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Our senior programs also sponsor Elder Fair, an annual event reaching approximately 400 senior citizens in Pitt County, and Senior Games, an event that gives senior citizens the opportunity to compete in various athletic events.
