Level I Trauma Center

Vidant Medical Center has been a designated Level I Trauma Center since the mid-1980s. The center was established to meet the regional trauma needs of eastern North Carolina. Vidant Medical Center is recognized nationally for its ongoing efforts to excellence in rural trauma care.

Trauma continues to be the leading cause of death through the first four decades of life, causing more disability and lost productivity than heart disease and cancer combined. In 2009, the Vidant Medical Center Emergency Department served 69,449 patients, 2,717 of whom had sustained significant trauma and required hospitalization. During the same year, the Minor Emergency Department, a freestanding extension of the ED for non-life-threatening needs, served 33,813 patients; the Burn Outpatient Clinic served more than 300 patients; and the Trauma Outpatient Clinic served more than 2,000 patients.

The Level I designation means that this trauma center conforms to the highest national and state standards for trauma care. The Vidant Medical CenterTrauma Center regularly provides education and support to other hospitals and to local rescue squads. As the Level I Trauma Center for eastern North Carolina, this center is responsible for the development and maintenance of a coordinated trauma system in the region and is the site of the Eastern Regional Advisory Committee (ERAC).
