Transplant Services

For 30 years, Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University (ECU) have improved the lives of end-stage renal disease patients in eastern North Carolina. Our multidisciplinary team -- surgeons, nephrologists, nurses, social workers and counselors – oversees an active waiting list that yields roughly 40 transplants per year.

Kidney transplant is a life-changing option for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension) are the most frequent causes of ESRD in eastern North Carolina. ESRD can also develop as a result of:

  • Trauma
  • Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Lupus
