Why ECU Health Surgery?
We have the daVinci robotic surgical system. In fact, the first mitral valve repair surgery in the United States using minimally invasive robotic technology was performed at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville in 2000.
This means small surgical tools and cameras are inserted into your body through very small incisions. Skilled surgeons use the camera to guide them through the procedure. Incisions can often be closed with just a few stitches. The advantages of minimally invasive surgery are quicker recovery time, less pain and decreased chance of infection.
More than 12,000 procedures are performed every year at ECU Health SurgiCenter, a free-standing outpatient surgical facility in Greenville.
The hybrid OR at The East Carolina Heart Institute at ECU Health Medical Center is an operating room equipped with a sophisticated imaging system that allows physicians to perform minimally invasive cardiac and vascular procedures with greater precision than ever before. For patients, a hybrid OR means reduced recovery time, better outcomes and getting back to normal routines quicker.
About our Accreditations
ECU Health Medical Center is accredited by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery and a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery. Health care facilities and surgeons seeking an SRC accreditation undergo an extensive assessment and inspection process to ensure the applicant meets SRC’s proven standards and requirements. These requirements include surgical volumes, facility equipment, clinical pathways and standardized operating procedures, an emphasis on patient education and continuous quality assessment. Inspectors educate staff in the accredited departments on best practices to help an organization improve its care and services.
