Board-certified pediatric cardiologists at ECU Health Maynard Children’s Hospital provide expert cardiology care and advanced treatment options for congenital and acquired heart conditions, from before birth through the teenage years and into adulthood.
Our inpatient cardiology team includes board-certified pediatric cardiologists who are on faculty at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, child life specialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers and others. In addition to inpatient hospital care, we provide care in our outpatient clinics throughout eastern North Carolina. We are available to referring physicians 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

What to Expect
During an initial appointment, in a child-friendly environment, most children will undergo an electrocardiogram (EKG) and/or echocardiogram (ECHO). Neither test is invasive or painful. These two tests, along with an examination and review of your child’s medical history, usually provide enough information for a cardiologist to make a diagnosis and develop a plan for ongoing cardiac care.
Additional testing may include arrhythmia monitoring, exercise stress test or cardiac imaging with CT scan or MRI. A child life specialist stays with your child during procedures to help lessen anxiety and stress. Above all, we are committed to providing personalized, child-friendly care in a nurturing environment.

Research
Clinical trials evaluate device closures, pulmonary hypertension, nutrition and treatments for adult congenital heart patients. As a member of the North Carolina Congenital Heart Defects Surveillance Network, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we are involved with important work to evaluate the prevalence and therapy for patients in North Carolina with congenital heart disease.
Camp Wholeheart
Complex congenital heart defect patients are invited every year to Camp WholeHeart, held at Camp Don Lee on the north shore of the Neuse River near Oriental, NC. This weekend camp provides a positive life experience for children with heart conditions and is supported by the Children’s Miracle Network.
