Patient Experience at Vidant Medical Center

Patients are randomly selected to take part in a phone survey called the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) . We survey patients to help us understand how they perceive their hospital experience and so we can improve our services. The surveyor asks questions to find out how the patient perceived the care he or she received during a particular hospital visit.

Patients who participated in the survey answered the following questions:

  1. How often did nurses communicate well with patients?
  2. How often did doctors communicate well with patients?
  3. How often did patients receive help quickly from hospital staff?
  4. How often was patients' pain well controlled?
  5. How often did staff explain about medicines before giving them to patients?
  6. How often were patients' rooms and bathrooms kept clean?
  7. How often was the area around patients' rooms kept quiet at night?
  8. Were patients given information about what to do during their recovery?
  9. How do patients rate the hospital?
  10. Would patients recommend the hospital to friends and family?
  11. * Did patients have an understanding of how to care for themselves after leaving the hospital?

* Comparison data not available until Fall 2014
