Day of surgery

Surgery Admissions is located on Heart Drive, adjacent to the Vidant Medical Center Emergency Entrance. Here’s a map for you. We provide free valet parking for patients and family members the day of surgery.

At the Surgery Admissions desk, we will ask for a picture ID showing your current address and a current insurance card. At least one ID must have your current address.

We will go over your paperwork and issue your family a pager. This pager is your family’s connection to you and your medical team. Your family will receive text messages to alert them when surgery starts and ends, and if there are any delays along the way. The pagers work throughout the hospital, including the Coffee Shop and cafeteria, so that your family members don’t feel as though they have to remain in the waiting area the entire time you are with your medical team. For your family’s convenience, we have lockers, restrooms, a snack area, free coffee, blankets, TV, WiFi and wheelchairs, all located in Surgical Admissions area.

We know your family is important. Two family members will be able to go back with you to the holding area. We’ll get your height and weight, assign you a bed space and get you changed into a hospital gown. You will get compression stockings to help prevent blood clots. You will meet with an anesthesiologist and stay in the holding area until it is time for your surgery.
