Vidant Medical Center Parking

As we build a healthier future for the people of eastern North Carolina, our hospital is growing. On May 25, 2015, a major traffic shift began near the front of Vidant Medical Center (VMC). This shift and some visitor parking relocation are due to the construction of our 140,000-square-foot cancer center and bed tower. You can see a map of the traffic shift here. These changes have caused some disruption for drivers and pedestrians around the VMC campus.

Watch hospital president Brian Floyd's latest video discussing the construction and parking changes related to our exciting new cancer center project.

Overview of Construction Changes:

  • June — ECHI main  lobby entrance, circular driveway closed. Admissions moves to Hospital Loop Road side of ECHI.
  • August — Main hospital lobby skylights replacement completed; scaffolding corridor to be removed. Traffic may be re-routed around lobby during evening work; lobby will remain open during the day.
  • September — Main cafeteria reopens after completion of renovations.

Getting to and from Visitor Parking Areas

Construction has resulted in reduced visitor parking in the lots in front of the main hospital and the East Carolina Heart Institute (ECHI). View an updated parking map.

To protect pedestrians and drivers, we have blocked off areas and sidewalks that border the building site. A pedestrian walkway has been added along the New Hospital Loop Road. Patient drop-off and pick-up areas remain open in front of the hospital.

To help patients, families and visitors find parking, we have provided the following:

  • New signs directing visitor and pedestrian traffic
  • Overflow parking areas to accommodate visitor spots displaced by the new road and construction activities
  • Free shuttle vans that run continuously between visitor parking areas, the front of the hospital and ECHI (Call 252-847-1547 for pick-up.)
  • Free valet parking for those cars being parked near overflow areas; service available from patient drop-off/pick-up area in front of the hospital and ECHI
  • Free campus bus service for visitors and employees. Please see details below for routes that serve the east side of campus. Our NextBus program provides real-time updates for bus arrivals at the various stops. You may text or call the number posted at each stop.
  • Our buses are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), meaning they have a ramp that may be lowered to allow easier access for anyone with mobility issues. Riders may ask the driver to lower the ramp, and all drivers are ready to assist as needed.
