We know that children are not little adults, but instead have unique health care needs. You’ll find clinical expertise for your child’s medical emergency at the Children’s Emergency Department located next to the main Emergency Department. Physicians and nurses who are highly and specially trained in pediatric emergencies staff our children’s emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

From traumatic injuries to medical illnesses, the children’s emergency medicine team cares for your child with equipment and technology designed for children of all ages. Our treatment rooms are large enough to accommodate and support the family as well. We offer comprehensive laboratory and radiology services, developmentally appropriate treatment, and appropriate sedation for potentially painful procedures.

Level II Pediatric Trauma Center

ECU Health Maynard Children’s Hospital is a Level II pediatric trauma center, providing children who experience any level of injury with comprehensive evaluation, treatment and care from arrival in our emergency department throughout hospitalization. For outcomes after traumatic brain injury in children, our hospital is in the top 10 percent in the nation.

Medical Transport

Our Children’s Transport Team is available to sick or injured infants and children across eastern North Carolina. The team consists of intensive-care trained nurses skilled in providing the specialty care many children need from the onset of transport to arrival at Maynard Children’s Hospital. This service is available 24/7 by helicopter or ambulance with our EastCare air medical transport service.

TEDI BEAR Children’s Advocacy Center

The TEDI BEAR Children’s Advocacy Center is the largest of its kind in North Carolina and is accredited to provide a full spectrum of assessment, treatment, education and prevention for children, up to 18 years old, who may have been victims of child abuse or neglect.

TEDI BEAR — Tender Evaluation, Diagnosis and Intervention for a BEtter Abuse Response — is a partnership between the Department of Pediatrics at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and Maynard Children’s Hospital.

How to Make an Appointment: For therapy services parents can make an appointment for their child. All other appointments are made by Law enforcement or DSS only.

Support Services

To support the non-clinical needs of children and families, social workers and chaplain services are available 24 hours a day. Child Life specialists are also available to help you and your child cope with the challenges of hospitalization, illness, injury and disability, focusing on mental, emotional and social needs.
