Children who require emergency care aren't just "little adults." They have special needs – from right-sized medical equipment to a little extra reassurance when things get scary.
The Children's Emergency Department at Vidant Medical Center provides quality and compassionate care to eastern North Carolina's youngest patients. The 13,000 square foot department is home to 16 exam rooms, including two trauma bays to treat the most sick and injured children.
Located next to our main Emergency Department, the children's center is friendly and welcoming from the moment you walk through the door. It is decorated with children in mind, featuring a wave and bubble theme, and includes soft colorful lighting with twinkling stars on exam room ceilings. Even the lobby is a pleasant and relaxing place for our young patients and their families with videos, game stations, and an interactive fish pond. Examples of our attention to child safety are everywhere – rounded countertops, hidden trash cans, locked cabinets and drawers, and beds that are low to the ground.
The Children's Emergency Department is designed to meet the needs of children and their families by providing quality emergency care. All of our physicians are board certified in emergency medicine and/or pediatric emergency medicine. Our staff also includes Child Life Specialists who work to calm the fears of our young patients and their families. They help prepare children for upcoming medical procedures and provide helpful information and support to parents and other family members.
Children now make up one in six emergency hospital visits. We expect to provide care to nearly 20,000 patients at the Children’s Emergency Department this year. Along with our existing Children's Hospital, it is an important part of the Vidant Medical Center promise to provide personal and complete medical services to the families of eastern North Carolina.
