Letter from the CEO

Dear Colleague:

As a physician, I am inspired by the expertise and commitment to excellence of my colleagues throughout eastern North Carolina. They each understand our region’s unique challenges and opportunities and are committed to designing innovative ways to meet them. As a result, they enjoy meaningful, fulfilling relationships with their patients and see the profound difference they make in the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.

ECU Health is a 1,708-bed rural academic health system comprised of nine hospitals, a children’s hospital and a physician group that encompasses over 1,100 academic and community providers practicing in over 180 primary and specialty clinics located in more than 130 locations. ECU Health Medical Center, our academic medical center and Level 1 Trauma facility, and ECU Health Maynard Children’s Hospital serve as the primary teaching hospitals for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The two mission-driven organizations provide enhanced rural health training opportunities for medical students and residents, as well as expanded research and clinical trial capabilities. Our critical care transport program, ECU Health EastCare, with five helicopters and nine ground ambulances operating from eight strategic locations, provides ready access to the full resources of our system of care. Together, we are bringing knowledge, innovation, technology, compassion — and people — together to be the national model for rural healthcare.

We are a fast-growing, physician-led career destination for medical professionals. You’ll find yourself serving alongside fellow providers and clinical teams at the peak of their careers — names you know and respect — who will welcome you into the ECU Health family with great enthusiasm. Supported by our dynamic clinical infrastructure, built-in referral network and system resources, ECU Health providers find themselves free to focus on patient care and self-care, building a career and a life they love, right here in eastern North Carolina. I know you will too.

We love what we do, and, more importantly, we love the people we serve. If you find that your professional goals align with our mission and vision and your personal values mirror ours, I hope you’ll join us in improving the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina.

Sincerely,

Mike Waldrum, MD, MS, MBA
Chief Executive Officer, ECU Health
Dean, Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University
