BATTLING BREAST CANCER

The number one cancer in Dare and surrounding counties is breast cancer. The Outer Banks Hospital has made a commitment to do everything it can to fight the disease.

One area for improvement identified by the hospital cancer committee was to improve timeliness to breast cancer diagnosis. The goal was to decrease the time from an abnormal mammogram to completion of a breast biopsy or other needed procedure.

The committee helped implement changes including:

  • Providing mobile mammography services
  • Streamlining the process to notify radiologists that results are ready for review
  • Hiring a breast cancer navigator to follow up on the biopsy results and assure timely follow-up care
  • Providing community education to increase breast cancer awareness
  • Establishing a breast clinic to assure timely access to expert breast care and follow-up

In May 2016, The Outer Banks Hospital was recognized for its commitment to providing comprehensive, high quality, patient-centered cancer care by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC).
