Total Knee Replacement

Knee replacement surgery is for people with severe knee damage that is not being helped by medication, physical therapy or other treatment. It can give a more permanent solution by relieving pain and allowing you to be more active.

During total knee replacement surgery, an 8- to 12-inch cut in made in the front of the knee. Damaged cartilage and bone is removed, and the thigh and shin bones are resurfaced where the two bones join together. The knee joint is replaced with plastic and metal parts that fit together to create a smooth gliding surface like your original knee.
