Skilled Nursing Care

Skilled nursing care is treatment that can only be given by licensed nurses. It is often given in residential facilities but can sometimes be performed in the patient’s home. It most often refers to care given to elderly and chronically ill patients.

Examples of skilled nursing care include:

  • Administering IV drugs, shots or tube feedings
  • Changing complex wound dressings
  • Inserting or replacing catheters
  • Teaching the patient or family about care and management for chronic diseases such as diabetes

Skilled nursing does not include palliative or hospice care services or long-term care needs.
