Manual physical therapy

Manual physical therapy is a type of physical therapy that is delivered with the hands instead of by a device or machine. In this treatment, the therapists use their hands to put pressure on muscle tissues and joints in an attempt to decrease back pain.

Techniques used in manual physical therapy include:

  • Soft tissue massage – applying pressure to relax muscles, increase circulation, break up scar tissue and relieve pain
  • Manipulation – using movements of varying speed and force to pull or push bones and joints into position

For long-term and effective relief of back pain, it is usually recommended to participate in other forms of treatment as well. These could include approved exercise programs and/or other types of physical rehabilitation.
