Hemicraniectomy

Hemicraniectomy is a surgery frequently used to treat stroke. In a hemicraniectomy, your surgeon will remove a portion of your skull and slice open the membrane surrounding your brain (dura mater). The opening in your skull will allow swollen brain tissue to push up and out, rather than compressing your brainstem and causing significant further illness.
