Myopathy

Myopathy is a very broad term that refers to any disorder, condition or disease that affects your muscle tissue. The primary symptom is muscle weakness.

Myopathy can be inherited – such as muscular dystrophies – or acquired – such as common muscle cramps.

Type of myopathies

  • Congenital – developmental delays in motor skills; skeletal and facial abnormalities are occasionally evident at birth
  • Muscular – progressive weakness in voluntary muscles; sometimes evident at birth
  • Mitochondrial – caused by genetic abnormalities in mitochondria, cellular structures that control energy
