Malnutrition

What is malnutrition?

Malnutrition is a condition that occurs when your body is not getting enough nutrients.

Causes of malnutrition

Malnutrition generally results from:

  • Poor diet
  • Starvation resulting from lack of available food
  • Eating disorders (i.e., anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder)
  • Existing medical conditions that prevent your body from digesting food or absorbing nutrients
  • Existing medical conditions that make you unable to eat

Symptoms of malnutrition

Symptoms can vary widely, but they often include extreme fatigue, dizziness and rapid weight loss.

Treatments

Treatment starts with replacement of missing nutrients, either through diet changes or medical interventions. Your physician may also treat your other symptoms and any underlying medical conditions.
