Cerebrovascular disease refers to problems that cause decreased blood flow to parts of the brain. These conditions are some of the most common reasons for death in the world today. The most common types of cerebrovascular disease are cerebral thrombosis (clots), cerebral embolism (blockage) and cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding). Aneurysms and strokes are also forms of cerebrovascular disease.

Causes and risk factors of cerebrovascular disease include:

  • Atherosclerosis – buildup of plaque in the blood vessels
  • Blood clots
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
