Community outreach and education

The following programs are designed to help keep our communities safe.

Child Safety Seat Inspection Station
In partnership with Greenville Fire/Rescue, trained technicians check child safety seats for proper installation and teach parents how to properly install the seats on Fridays at Station 1, 500 South Greene Street, from 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM.

One Friday each month, the inspection station is open for families who need seats. Based on eligibility, families may only have to pay a portion of the seat’s cost. The cost is $30 per seat. The seats are distributed to clients with proof of Medicaid or public assistance on the 4th Friday at Greenville Fire/Rescue Station 1, from 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Call 252-847-8688 for more information.

Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program (ECIPP)
The Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program, known as ECIPP, was established in 1995 as a joint effort between then-Pitt County Memorial Hospital Trauma Center and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University Department of Emergency Medicine. The program strives to improve the health of area citizens by reducing the incidence and impact of injuries. For more information about ECIPP, call 252-847-8688.

Pitt County SAFE KIDS Coalition
The mission of this project is to prevent unintentional injuries to children from birth to 19 years of age. The local coalition is an affiliate of Safe Kids Worldwide and is a community collaboration among health professionals, law enforcement and parents to prevent pediatric injuries. The program serves as a consultant to counties in the region that wish to become SAFE KIDS Coalition members. The coalition conducts educational events, training and clinics.

Focus areas include water safety, sports safety, fire safety, poison safety, bicycle safety, child passenger safety and pedestrian safety.

Safe Communities Coalition of Pitt County
Initially funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this is a group of citizens and local agencies partnering to identify traffic problems, develop, implement and evaluate interventions to make travel safer in Pitt County.

The Safe Driving School is a collaborative effort with Pitt Community College and the local District Attorney’s Office where citizens who have received traffic speeding citations can be referred to take an eight-hour Driver Improvement Course.

The Bicycle Safety Initiative, PEDAL, is a bicycle injury prevention strategy that operates in many counties in our service area. Since 1999, collaboration with the Pitt County Schools to promote bicycle safety has focused on fourth-grade physical education classes. Those completing the Basics of Bicycling course are fitted and receive a bicycle helmet.
