Palliative Care

Palliative care is designed to provide relief of pain and suffering for the child and family during all stages of life. The multidisciplinary team at Vidant Medical Center includes doctors, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, chaplains and other professionals who work with the child and family as they experience very difficult circumstances that often include the loss of the infant/child.

When a cure of a child's condition is not likely, the palliative care team works closely with the child and family to promote the best quality of life than can be attained, all the while assuring that the child and family's personal priorities and beliefs remain the focus of the plan of care. Our program addresses emotional and spiritual as well as physical needs. Palliative care provides compassionate and specialized care for the living as long as life remains.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has established minimum standards for pediatric palliative care:

  • Priority for tertiary centers serving children
  • Pediatric palliative care assistance 24 hours a day/365 days a year
  • Interdisciplinary palliative care team
  • Respite care for caregivers
  • Bereavement support
