Beads of Courage

Beads of Courage is a professional program created in response to the need for more supportive programs for children experiencing cancer and related treatments. The program is designed to honor the journey children take when they are diagnosed with cancer. Through the program, children tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their unique treatment path.

Goals of the program:

  • Visually acknowledge the courage displayed in each visit a child makes to the hospital.
  • Provide something tangible children can use to tell their unique stories during completion of therapy.
  • Recognize the challenging journey throughout treatment.
  • Create meaning from the many procedures children must cope with throughout treatment.
  • Increase therapeutic alliance between provider and patient with caring relationships and connectedness to patient and family.
  • Recognize the importance of the role of the professional caregiver as a source of support and as a source of knowledge and education.
  • Decrease work-related stress by adding brightness, play, and fun to the care of children with cancer.
  • Increase capacity-building of providers through leadership, growth and knowledge.
