James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital

Dedicated Space to Support Our Youngest Patients

When we opened our doors in 2013, we made a promise to the 29 counties we serve across eastern North Carolina — to ensure the best possible future for our children. Child-focused, family-centered care for our youngest patients is how we deliver on that promise.

Designed to ease young minds

Every inch of our 78,000-square-foot facility was designed with children’s needs in mind. Beyond the shape of the building itself and the ocean theme throughout, the following features are just a few of the innovative ways we help reduce children’s anxieties and keep families close together:
  • Multi-touch interactive wall in the waiting room
  • Diversion rooms to relax and calm children during certain procedures
  • Play spaces for younger patients to socialize with friends, siblings and other patients; teen lounge for 11 and older
  • Play therapy island, an outdoor healing environment
  • Video games in room via hospital laptops with age-appropriate games
  • Seascape theater for events that you can attend or stream to your room

We’ve tried to think of everything to make you and your loved ones as comfortable as possible while you’re in our care.

Ready for anything

The pediatricians, pediatric specialists, surgeons and residents at Maynard Children's Hospital are dedicated to providing outstanding health care to the children we serve—from the tiniest premature infant to the injured high school student. Our clinical team also includes nurse practitioners, nurses, therapists and child life specialists. Some of the specialized programs, services and units we offer include the following:

Whether you’re here for a short visit or a longer stay, we want to help ease the stress and complexity of having a hospitalized child.

Here for the whole family

Right on the first floor, siblings and friends can enjoy the swings, climbing structures and basketball court in the play therapy yard. Our Family Resource Center is ready to answer any questions you might have, and we’re always happy to tell you about the many ongoing services we offer outside the hospital, too, such as camps for kids, an injury prevention program, a school nurse program and more.

Families can relax, do laundry and shower at the Ronald McDonald House six-room retreat, located right inside the hospital, just steps away from the pediatric units. Just across the street from Vidant Medical Center, The Ronald McDonald House of Eastern North Carolina provides temporary housing for families who are caring for sick or injured children receiving treatment at area medical facilities. It offers the comforts of home and and a welcoming environment where families can rest, prepare hot meals and share their concerns with other parents in similar situations.

Our pledge to you

At Maynard Children’s Hospital, you and your loved ones are an important part of our medical team—which means parents, grandparents, caregivers and friends are encouraged to play an active role in your child’s healing process. You’re welcome here anytime. And from the moment you come through our doors, we pledge to honor your privacy, listen to your questions and explain our care.
