Vidant Health hosts national conference in Greenville focused on equity and inclusion

March 21, 2019 posted by Jason Lowry

Greenville, N.C.  – Vidant Health welcomed leaders and influencers from seven other leading health systems to Greenville this week as part of a national initiative to foster equity.

Vidant’s team, led by Chief Experience Officer Dr. Julie Kennedy-Oehlert and Chief Human Resources Officer John A. Marques, hosted the two-day conference along with leaders from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on enhancing health care.

“As the largest employer in eastern North Carolina, Vidant Health has a moral obligation to create opportunities that uplift all people,” said CEO Mike Waldrum in addressing the group. “This is also a primary focus of the care we provide. We believe culture is something you build and form, and not just accept—it’s the intentional relationships we develop, making us all leaders in fulfilling our mission of improving the health and well-being of our region.”

Vidant’s equity and inclusion initiatives are still in early stages, but Waldrum said important strides are already being made. “They are driven from the highest levels in our organization, ensuring the process has structure, executive support and funding,” he said. Vidant is closely monitoring key factors to measure and report progress.

Along with Vidant Health, the other organizations involved in this two-year Pursuing Equity initiative are:

  • HealthPartners
    Bloomington, Minnesota
  • Henry Ford Health System
    Detroit, Michigan
  • Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals
    Oakland, California
  • Main Line Health
    Newtown Square, Pennsylvania
  • Northwest Colorado Health
    Steamboat Springs, Colorado
  • Rush University Medical Center
    Chicago, Illinois
  • Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, Brigham & Women’s Hospital
    Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts

The organizations are diverse in size, geography and patient populations they serve. All were selected for participation for their potential to transform health care to become more equitable and inclusive for all.
