Vidant Medical Center employees’ projects chosen for presentation

GREENVILLE –Vidant Medical Center employees were selected to present abstracts and/or posters at conferences for their respective disciplines.

Dr. Addisalem T Makuria with the patient blood management program at Vidant Medical Center (VMC), along with Dr. Tracy Eskra, vice president of medical affairs – clinical efficiency and documentation at VMC, and Reggie Pearson, PhD, senior vice president, VMC, co-authored the abstract titled “Impact of Restrictive Transfusion Guideline on Red Blood Cell Transfusion Incidence,” which has been selected to be presented at the upcoming 2016 American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) annual meeting, Oct. 22 – 25, in Orlando, FL.

The AABB works closely with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and provides technical input into the development of blood regulations for the U.S. Its mission is to advance the practice and standards of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies to optimize patient and donor care and safety.

Shakira Henderson, PhD, DNP, MS, MPH, RNC-NIC, IBCLC- director for nursing research at VMC, had two international presentations this summer. In July, Henderson, presented at the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) 26th International Nursing Research Congress in South Africa. Her presentation was titled “The Impact of Instructional Methodology of the WHO/UNICEF Breastfeeding Training on Maternal Child Nurse Breastfeeding Knowledge Gain and Perception of Breastfeeding Support.”

In August Henderson traveled to Lima, Peru to present the “Public Health Risks of Formula Feeding” and “Burnout in Lactation Consultants” at International Congress of Maternal Lactation and Infant Health as a board representative of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
