Vidant Health hospitals earn top honors for patient experiences

GREENVILLE — Four hospitals within Vidant Health earned top honors in patient experience surveys in a competition involving hospitals across the country.

HealthStream Research, a national data collection service, awarded the Excellence through Insight honors to the hospitals for their commitment to providing exceptional patient experiences. These awards recognize the facilities that excel in their ability to gain insight into the patients, employees, physicians and community perceptions through research and to use that information to build excellence within their organization.

“We are extremely proud of our patient experience results,” said Dave McRae, chief executive officer for Vidant Health. “It is quite an honor for our hospitals to be singled out as superior performers in making sure the patients and families have good experiences. This recognition also reflects the exceptional care the physicians and staff provide every day.”

The Vidant Health hospitals receiving the awards are:

• Albemarle Health, Elizabeth City, for outpatient – same-day surgery unit
• Vidant Beaufort Hospital, Washington, for overall outpatient satisfaction for hospitals with fewer than 100 beds
• Vidant Edgecombe Hospital, Tarboro, for inpatient – obstetrics and gynecology
• Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, for inpatient – rehabilitation and inpatient – cardiology units.

Vidant Health hospitals were chosen for receiving the highest ratings in overall patient satisfaction from among HealthStream’s clients, as well as exceeding industry standards.

“Receiving this type of recognition is a thrill for all of us at Albemarle Health,” said President Sharon Tanner. “And although this award recognizes the achievements of a single department, we know it takes our entire team – employees, physicians, and volunteers – to provide such high-quality care consistently.”

Harvey Case, president of Vidant Beaufort Hospital, said, “We are very pleased to be recognized by HealthStream for this achievement. Our thanks go out to the physicians and staff in our outpatient department who are committed to providing safe, high-quality patient-centered care with a smile.”

“We have a great team providing women’s services to our community,” said Wick Baker, president of Vidant Edgecombe Hospital. “ I am delighted that they are being recognized in this way. The entire team works with one purpose: to make sure the patients’ experience exceeds expectations.”

“This recognition is a wonderful reflection of the caring staff and physicians we have at Vidant Medical Center,” said Steve Lawler, president of the flagship hospital in Greenville.

The competition featured hospitals of similar size competing against each other.

To qualify for an award, a hospital must have been a patient satisfaction-tracking client of HealthStream Research in 2011, scored in the 75th percentile or higher, and surveyed a minimum of 100 patients.

Winners will be recognized during an awards ceremony at the HealthStream Summit March 8 in Nashville, Tenn.

Vidant Health will have representatives from the winning organizations attending the summit to accept the awards.
