The Outer Banks Hospital Receives 2016 Innovator Award

November 04, 2016 by Wendy Kelly

OBH Director of Cancer Services, Robin Hearne, RN MS and Senior Administrator of Operations, Amy Montgomery were presented with the 2016 ACCC Innovator Award at the 33rd Annual National Oncology Conference in St. Louis on October 19th. The award honors cancer programs that have exhibited pioneering and creative solutions to improving the effectiveness of cancer care.

The Outer Banks Hospital was honored for its cancer prevention efforts through an innovative approach to increasing vaccination rates against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). In 2014, when The Outer Banks Hospital Cancer Committee confirmed the alarmingly low human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates in the community, the committee developed an evidence-based outreach strategy around the importance of cancer prevention and HPV vaccination. Engaging the county health department and school district leaders as strategic partners, a multi-faceted educational campaign was disseminated to primary care providers and parents of adolescents.

“We are honored to be included in this elite group of winners”, said Hearne. “It’s confirmation that our efforts around cancer prevention here at The Outer Banks Hospital are on par with some of the top cancer programs around the county.” The Outer Banks hospital was one of eight recipients of this year’s award.
