Vidant North Hospital — formerly Halifax Regional— in Roanoke Rapids kicked off a new era under a new name on Jan. 14.

Community leaders, Vidant Health team members, friends and family came together for a naming ceremony and celebration on the hospital’s campus. Vidant North Hospital President Will Mahone expressed his excitement with Vidant Health and said the two entities are stronger together.

“Yes, we’ll unveil a new name today but it’s not about a new name on a sign and it’s not about a sign on a building,” Mahone said. “It’s about the people that we care about, the people that are around you right now, those are family, friends and loved ones.”

Elijah Lee joined the ceremony on Tuesday as well. The 11-year-old has raised funds for two pediatric safe rooms and supplies to fill them at Vidant North Hospital. He is on a mission to end child abuse.

Mahone announced during the ceremony that Vidant Health Foundation will help with the cost to complete the safe rooms.

“We know and appreciate how much this effort means to you, Elijah, and our community,” he said. “We stand by you and we continue to raise awareness for child abuse. So on behalf of Vidant and the community, thank you for all you do.”

Lee said he loved the opportunity to attend the event and hear the speakers share their excitement for the new name of the hospital. He was happy to have the support of Vidant Health Foundation in his efforts to provide a safe and caring environment for children.

Jay Briley, president of Vidant Community Hospitals, said he looked forward to seeing the continued investments in Vidant North Hospital. Briley emphasized that the hospital will bring great care close to home for those in the northern-most region of Vidant Health’s area of care.

He outlined the vision of the hospital as a premier provider for specialty care in the region. Cancer services have been developed at the hospital, including recruitment of staff and facility renovation. There have been new processes launched to care for stroke patients at the hospital and efforts for new CT scanners and 3-D mammography are also underway. Briley said there have already been great strides of improvement at the hospital.

“In positioning this strong clinical team here within Vidant’s system of care, we’ve already seen this hospital shift from a location where patients were transferred out, to now, more and more, being a location where patients are transferred to.”

Vidant Health Chief Executive Officer Dr. Michael Waldrum said community is at the heart of Vidant Health’s mission to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina. While eastern North Carolina faces many challenges, the strength of an organization like Vidant Health can help combat those challenges in a unique way.

Dr. Waldrum also expressed his excitement for the community and his readiness to continue to fight for access to care in the region.

“This is all about how we come together as a group of people that care about each other and care about our communities to solve these problems,” Dr. Waldrum said, “and to provide excellent care and a future for our communities.”

The ceremony included the unveiling of signs across the campus and the raising of a Vidant Health flag in front of the hospital.

Fannie Greene, chairman of the Director’s Council at Vidant North Hospital, said it was a historic day for Halifax and Northampton counties.

“We will continue providing leadership for the new journey ahead as we grow to enhance the health care of this county, our families, our friends and our neighbors,” Greene said.

Dr. Kenneth Robert, medical director for Vidant Medical Group, spoke on behalf of team members and providers at the event and shared his excitement for the new Vidant North Hospital and announced name changes for four practices in the area. Those new practice names are: Vidant Family Medicine – Roanoke Rapids, Vidant General Surgery – Roanoke Rapids, Vidant Heart & Vascular Care – Roanoke Rapids and Vidant Sleep Medicine – Roanoke Rapids.
