Dr. Julie Kennedy Oehlert, Vidant’s chief experience officer (CXO), has been recognized as one of the 25 hospital and health system CXOs to know for 2020 by Becker’s Hospital Review.

As the recognition noted: “As the chief experience officer at Vidant Health, Dr. Kennedy spearheads all executive leadership and strategic oversight patient experience, team member experience, equity and inclusion and workplace safety. She has a unique background with a doctorate of nursing practice in health innovation and leadership from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Kennedy has held strategic and operational roles in acute care and outpatient settings.”

Dr. Oehlert’s work has put love and the team member experience at the center of a holistic organizational strategy.

“How team members experience each other and Vidant, is how patients will experience their care,” said Dr. Oehlert. “With love as the guiding intention, results in team engagement, quality, safety and patient experiences continue to improve.”

Dr. Oehlert and Dr. Linda Hofler, chief nursing officer for Vidant Health, were recently published in Nurse Leaders. Their article highlights work focused on love, and supporting a caring environment at Vidant.

The data backs it up: team member engagement continues to improve across the system, as does the patient experience.

These continued improvements results in part from a strategy coined as “the Big Experience” or “Big E,” which acknowledges that team member experience and patient experience are seen as dependent on each other. This strategy leads to improved relationships, engagements, safety behaviors, turnover and other measures. When everyone's experience matters, with love guiding the way, results will follow.
