Dr. Michael Waldrum named CEO of Vidant Health

GREENVILLE, NC — Vidant Health announced today that Dr. Michael Waldrum, an experienced leader with a track record of enhancing quality and clinical operations, will join the organization as chief executive officer. An exact start date has not yet been determined. 

“I am honored and excited to be given this opportunity to lead an organization like Vidant Health in finding ways to improve the health of eastern North Carolina,” said Waldrum. “I look forward to collaborating with the physician community and the 12,000 employees of Vidant Health to make this region a healthier place to live.” 

Waldrum has significant expertise and experience managing the clinical operations of hospitals and clinics. In his most recent role, he served as the president and chief executive officer of The University of Arizona Health Network. Prior to that he was the CEO of the University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham and vice president of the UAB Health system. He also served as chief operating officer and chief information officer of the UAB Health System.

He has the ability to form strong partnerships and relationships and the experience of leading rural health systems in today’s health care environment.”

Waldrum graduated from the University of The South Sewanee in Tennessee with a BA in English and the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. He earned his MBA from the University of Michigan. 

Waldrum is a board-certified specialist in critical care medicine and pulmonology and trained in internal medicine. He has expertise in using clinical data to improve care and outcomes and enhancing all levels of patient- and family-centered care. 

Waldrum and his wife, Susan, will be relocating to Greenville. They have four children who are grown and live across the southeastern United States. They have one granddaughter, Olivia. 

Janet Mullaney has been serving as interim CEO of Vidant Health since October 2014. She will return to her role as chief administrative officer once Waldrum assumes the CEO role.
