If you suffer from back pain, you are certainly not alone. Nearly 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives and it is the second most common reason for people to miss work.

Dr. Aaron Danison, a neurosurgeon at Vidant Health, joined WITN for the Healthy Habits segment on Tuesday morning to discuss ways to alleviate or avoid back pain altogether.

While back pain can impact anyone from young, active people to older adults, it is most commonly the result of not exercising, being overweight and poor posture.

In a desk job it is easy to find yourself slouching over and for those frequently looking down at their cellphone, it is a problem as well.

"One of the major things that cause back pain is how we sit at computers and our smart phones. We have horrible posture," Dr. Danison said. "One of the easiest things we can do to help alleviate some of that back pain, besides exercising, is just focus on your posture."

Dr. Danison shared a few tips to help with alleviating or preventing back pain.

  • Stay active and get daily exercise
  • Focus on keeping your back upright to avoid looking down
  • Stretch when sitting to keep your back moving
  • Try to shed extra pounds by eating a healthy and nutritious diet
  • Avoid using tobacco, particularly smoking

Dr. Danison said though 80% of people with back pain do get better, there is a time to seek out a qualified neurosurgeon like those at Vidant Neurosurgery to have their back checked and identify the root cause of the problem.

"If they start developing severe back pain or weakness or they're having problems with their bowel or bladder control, they should seek help," Dr. Danison said.
