20th annual Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals radiothon to be held March 2-3

March 01, 2017 by Beth Anne Atkins

GREENVILLE – Radio listeners will once again be able to offer the chance for a brighter tomorrow for hospitalized children during the 20th annual “Music for Miracles” radiothon March 2-3 on 107.9 WNCT.

The two-day radio marathon raises money to benefit the programs and services of Maynard Children’s Hospital. In 2016, there were more than 53,000 pediatric inpatient and outpatient visits from a 29-county region in eastern North Carolina. One hundred percent of the funds raised by our Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN) directly supports programs and services of Maynard Children’s Hospital.

“We are so incredibly grateful to the team and leadership at 107.9 WNCT for opening their station (and airways) to us for the past 20 years,” said Rhonda James, director, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “Year after year, the 107.9 team helps us to share the stories of former patients who have experienced the care of Maynard Children’s Hospital and to ask their loyal listeners to call in their pledges to support sick and injured children here in eastern North Carolina.”

In 1998, the first radiothon raised $5,400. Thanks to the loyal listeners of 107.9 and the dedicated radio staff and personalities, the event has raised more than $3.3 million to date. At Maynard Children’s Hospital, these funds have been used to purchase life-saving medical equipment and diversionary items for kids, provide staff and patient education, as well as to help build new facilities.

Most recently, a new dedicated children’s transport team was put into place and CMN funds were used to purchase a dedicated vehicle for their use. This dedicated children's hospital transport team provides transport services for sick infants and children throughout eastern North Carolina. The team is comprised of intensive-care trained nurses who are skilled at providing the specialty care many of these children need from the onset of transport to the arrival at the hospital. With the addition of this vehicle, this team will be available 24/7 by helicopter or ambulance whenever a child in the region is in need.

For the on-air personalities of 107.9 WNCT, the “Music for Miracles” radiothon is a yearly highlight and a project they all eagerly anticipate. “For 19 years, the 107.9 family has come together to make miracles happen for our kids,” said Donna Kelly. “Now in its 20th year, we believe this one will be bigger and better, because we need 20 more years of miracles in eastern North Carolina, and we know our listeners believe that, too.”

“Last year was my first radiothon, and I was humbled by the strength of the CMN children and their families and amazed at the generosity of our listeners,” said Marc Miller. “It is true that 107.9 has the best listeners in the world.”

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is a fund-raising program of the Vidant Health Foundation. Maynard Children’s Hospital in Greenville serves children and their families living throughout a 29-county region in eastern North Carolina.
