What can I do to prepare for my visit and make payment decisions?
When making medical payment decisions, make sure you first know the total cost of your services. Then, it's best to check with your insurance company to learn:
- What your insurance will cover
- What you will owe out of pocket
- What methods of payment the facility accepts
- Who (you or the facility's office staff) will be completing insurance forms.
What is a deductible? Co-insurance? A co-payment?
A deductible is the initial amount of "covered" health costs that you pay before your insurance plan begins to pay. A deductible is usually a set dollar amount such as $500 or $1,000.
Co-insurance is the portion of your health care expenses not covered by insurance. Co-insurance is usually a percentage figure, such as 10 percent or 20 percent.
For example, on a $500 bill, your deductible might be $150, so you would have to pay the first $150. This leaves a balance of $350. Of that $350, your co-insurance might be 20 percent, meaning that you will have to pay an additional $70. Your insurance company will pay the remaining $280.
A co-payment is a portion of a claim or medical expense that a member must pay out of pocket. It is usually a fixed amount, such as $20.
Once you know these amounts, there are a number of ways to pay your bill:
- If you owe a deductible or co-payment, you will be asked to pay an estimate of your portion of the bill at the time of service.
- Vidant Health will file claims with your insurance company. After insurance has paid their portion, you will receive a bill for the remaining balance. You may pay your bill in person, by phone or online.
- If you are unable to make payment in full, please call us at 252-847-4472 to speak with a financial counselor about your options.
What other bills will I receive?
In addition to your bill from the hospital, you may receive bills from other physicians who may have provided services to you. For instance, you may receive bills from consulting physicians, radiologists or other specialists. Please contact their office directly if you have questions concerning their bills.
Why didn't my insurance pay?
Please contact customer service at 252-847-4472 or 800-788-4473 or contact your insurance company using the phone number on the back of your insurance card.
