When your child’s care requires surgery.

Having a child who needs surgery can be extremely stressful for the parent and patient alike. At ECU Health Maynard Children’s Hospital, we aim to make the process as easy, comfortable and family friendly as possible. Our pediatric surgeons have years of additional training in surgery just for children to ensure our smallest patients are treated with surgical approaches and methods that are right for them. Specializing in the surgical care of children from newborn to age 18, we care for patients with a wide variety of congenital, infectious, traumatic and other conditions.

We care for children who need elective or emergency surgery for problems involving the skin, neck, chest, breasts, lungs, abdomen, groin and gastrointestinal tract. We also perform common procedures involving the face, urologic and reproductive systems. Whether a minor lump or bump or a large tumor, our team is prepared and trained to guide your family through surgical evaluation and treatment. For expecting mothers carrying a child with known birth defects, we offer prenatal consultation to help families understand what lies ahead.

Many of our board-certified pediatric surgeons are also faculty at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and provide inpatient hospital care, outpatient clinic visits, and outreach services for pediatric patients in eastern North Carolina. Call 252-744-1111 for more information.

At Maynard Children’s Hospital, our team provides a comprehensive range of services focused on the health needs of children.

Level II Trauma Center

A room in the Maynard Children's Hospital Emergency Department sits ready for a patient.

Maynard Children’s Hospital is a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. As the only verified pediatric trauma center in eastern North Carolina, we meet or exceed rigorous quality standards set by the American College of Surgeons, ensuring outstanding care for injured children. Our dedicated trauma surgeons are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in conjunction with a team of pediatric specialists dedicated to early treatment and healing.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

We want your child to have as little pain and as fast of a recovery from surgery as possible. Our pediatric surgeons use the latest techniques in minimally invasive surgery, in which smaller incisions and cameras are used to perform procedures in the chest, abdomen and groin.

The many benefits of minimally invasive surgery include decreased pain, shorter hospital stays, lower complication risks, less blood loss and need for transfusion, less scarring, and a faster return to normal activities.

Anesthesiology

When your child needs surgery, procedures or imaging studies that could be painful or stressful, our board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists and pediatric sedation team strive to make the experience as safe and comfortable as possible.

Research

Our surgeons continually enhance their skills and knowledge through continuing medical education and research. We have clinical trials in oncology, trauma and injury prevention research.

Child Life Specialists

Child Life specialists at our hospital help our surgical patients and their families minimize stress and learn positive coping skills. These skilled professionals are with your child before and after his or her operation, providing age-appropriate toys and distraction techniques.
