Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness, focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of illness. Palliative care is based on the needs of the patient, not on the patient’s prognosis, and can be provided along with curative treatment.

Rainbow Services provide education and emotional support for families of children with cancer. Resources include life skills such as how to get insurance, as well as information on scholarships for cancer survivors.

Camp Rainbow is a week-long summer camp for children with cancer, hemophilia and other chronic blood disorders and their siblings.

Beads of Courage is a national program designed to honor the challenging journey for children experiencing cancer and related treatments. Children tell their story with a collection of beads for procedures, tests and treatment milestones that becomes a symbol of courage and serves to remind them of all they have accomplished.

Beads are the earliest art form known to humans. Every time a bead is given, courage is honored, suffering is alleviated, resilience is strengthened, and the experience of human caring is affirmed. While rewarding accomplishments and milestones, enabling children to celebrate and track their progress, the program also gives children a way to get through future procedures. They know that, at the end, they will get another bead.

At Maynard Children’s Hospital, children and families have access to the good work of organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Dream Factory and Riley’s Army. Ronald McDonald House is also available to support families with meals and lodging during their child’s outpatient and inpatient treatments.
